Frequently Asked Questions
|
1) What is floating?
Simply put floatation therapy, or a float, involves lying in 25cm deep warm water with enough Epsom salts to support the body to float effortlessly in a weightless state. External distractions like light, sound and touch, are minimised to create a space where a deep sense of relaxation and peace can be achieved.
Research shows that when the brain is freed from all sensations - gravity, temperature, sight, sound, touch - it enters a theta brainwave state which can normally only be achieved through deep meditation. Essentially, floating is a short cut to the beneficial effects of years of meditative training.
2) How long is a float session?
The float session will last one hour and twenty minutes including time to shower and change. However, we recommend you allow an extra 15-30 minutes to relax afterwards with some complementary refreshments.
3) What is float-combining?
The deep state of relaxation reached during a floatation session is a perfect partner for holistic exercise and complementary therapies. float is the first floatation centre to actively promote combining floatation with other well being activities. As a general rule, we recommend floatation after exercise and before complementary therapies, but do check with your therapist as it may differ in some circumstances.
4) What is a floatation tank?
float has four state of the art floatation tanks, one for each of the four individual floatation suites, which are curvaceous and friendly featuring a full length 'dolphin' style door. The tank is designed so it can operate with the door open or closed and the internal light on or off, the controls for this are on the interior within fingertip reach whilst floating.
5) What should I bring?
No need to bring anything except yourself. A towel, slippers, Living Nature shower gels and moisturisers, and John Masters Organics shampoo and conditioner are all provided and we recommend floating naked rather than in a swimming costume. There are also plenty of books available downstairs to browse while you enjoy some complementary refreshments at the end of your appointments.
6) Do I need to book?
Yes. Sometimes a same day float session is available but it is definitely advisable to call in advance to be sure.
7) Can I come with a friend?
Yes. Floating is a very unique experience and it is wonderful to share it with a friend. We can reserve two float suites at the same time for you but it is not possible to share the same tank.
8) Will my skin go wrinkly?
No. The high salt content of the water means that the water will not draw the salt from your skin causing wrinkles as happens in a long bath. In fact, the Epsom salts are actually very nourishing for the skin and yours will feel silky soft after your float session.
9) What if I am claustrophobic?
The float tank is in a private lockable room meaning there is no need to close the lid of the tank or switch off the light if you do not wish to.
10) Can I float if I am pregnant?
Yes, although it is always a good idea to check with your GP first.
The weightless environment of the tank is actually greatly beneficial for expectant mothers. Stress and strain on your back and abdominal muscles is alleviated during your float. The deep state of mental relaxation is also wonderful for both mother and child.
11) What if I can't swim?
You don't need to swim - you will float like a cork! The density of Epsom salts in the water will support you entirely. The water is also only 25cm deep so you can touch the bottom at any time.
12) How much does it cost?
Regular floating is incredibly beneficial as is float-combining and so we have created special offers to allow you to treat yourself to regular visits. Please see our price list for all details and special offers.
13) How do I know it is hygienic?
The high salt content of the water means that nothing harmful can live in the float environment. An advanced filtration system filters the water between each float session ensuring a totally clean, sterile environment.
14) Is there anyone who shouldn't float?
Anyone suffering from epilepsy, schizophrenia, kidney conditions or acute skin disorders should avoid floating.
It is inadvisable to float during menstruation.
Call float prior to booking an appointment if you are currently breast-feeding.
15) Is there anything else I should know?
Avoid shaving on the day of your float as freshly shaved skin may be irritated and thereby detract from the experience.
